Ian Masterson: A Master of the Real Estate Game

07-Oct-2019
Ian Masterson
Two decades in real estate and 15 years in the Royal Australian Air Force makes Ian Masterson a property professional to reckon with.

Having sold more than 500 properties in his career and achieving Top 3 individual sales transactor ranking within the Realmark network last year, Ian is going from strength to strength.

At Realmark’s 2019 Annual Awards Ian was awarded the group’s most significant award of the night, the A.P.R.I.L. award, for being a true advocate of core Realmark values.

Realmark Group Managing Director, John Percudani said, “This award is given to someone who displays real passion and understanding of Realmark, together with loyalty, commitment, good practice, and who are respected by their peers within the group.

“This is someone who truly demonstrates the combined attributes of Ability, Practice, Reputation, Integrity and Leadership. A.P.R.I.L .”

“This year Ian was awarded by his peers for the A.P.R.I.L award for his genuine commitment to the group and always exemplifying Realmark’s core values. He is a truly deserving winner of this award .”

Ian said winning the A.P.R.I.L. award had been a career highlight and he had been honoured to be chosen.

“What I liked about this award was that it is more than just about sales or numbers, it is about being a good person and about acting with leadership and integrity and the fact it is voted for by your peers is a huge compliment and has certainly been a career highlight,” he said.

Ian said he chose to join the Realmark network in 2013 because they offered an incomparable business model and level of professionalism. Ian is placed in the Realmark North Coastal office with Principal Jeanette Bates.

“Jeanette and I had worked together for 13 years before joining Realmark and when we were winding up an old business we job interviewed a lot of big-name real estate companies to see where we wanted to end up. It became exceedingly apparent that the difference between some of the companies and Realmark was like comparing Kindergarten level to University level.”

“It was a ridiculously huge gap in terms of professionalism, the systems they had in place and future thinking. Since then, having worked with Realmark Founders and Group Managing Directors, John and Anita Percudani, that level hasn’t dissipated. When we started, there were eight offices and now there are 16.

“John and Anita’s demeanour in driving the business and being ahead of the game is second to none.”

“What I have always liked about Realmark is they don’t do reactionary real estate, they are always thinking about what the market is going to be doing in 12 months or 18 months time.”

“John is always thinking today about the future. I have never encountered working with anyone who always thinks like that but it is a huge part of the business model. And I feel extremely comfortable knowing that the people who are making the big decisions in the business are really informed, intelligent, capable people.”

Ian is a strong advocate for the Realmark group and says the network’s marketing tools and systems were ahead of the game.

“Realmark has outstanding marketing tools and systems that other companies and agents simply can’t provide,” he said.

“Realmark’s marketing is 100 per cent ahead of the game. Perth is only just now getting into no price marketing and we were the pioneer’s of set date sale, there is not a company in Perth that does it better.”

Ian’s military background has played a significant role in his working life.

“My core values of professionalism, hard work, honesty and integrity that I grew up with in-service life are now naturally a part of my career in real estate,” he said.

“What you miss most when you leave the military is the camaraderie and support network and what appealed to me about Realmark is you have that camaraderie within the group.

“Working with Jeanette and the network of high-quality professionals within Realmark across sales and property management means I still have that sense of working together and working as a team. We share rather than compete and we learn a lot from each other.”

Being in the military gives you a strong moral code and discipline and it translates well across to real estate.

“What I like about Realmark is that it is extremely in line with my values that real estate is about people. I always tell my property owners that real estate is not about property, that is just the product we sell, but really it is about people. And that is the ethos of Realmark, to work with people and act with honesty and integrity and the systems within the company allow us to do that easily.”

Despite having had his best year professionally last year, Ian said the past few years had been difficult personally having lost family members but that it had helped give him a different perspective on how he interacted with people.

“What I have found is that I am now able to really be happy in the journey of helping people. I am happy that within real estate I can be part of helping solve their problems.

“Part of that is jumping on board Realmark’s fundraising efforts for SOS, Starting Over Support, where the Realmark True Blue Team help put sellers who want to re-house their furniture in touch with SOS so that people who are in need, most often women with children running from domestic violence situations without anything to their name, can benefit.”

“I have also raised $3000 for the Cancer Council abseiling down the QV1 building. It is all about giving back and Realmark do that so well.”

“The company ethos of helping others sits really well with me and it comes from the top, I believe Anita and John are very genuine in their approach to humans. They genuinely want to help and always put people first.”

Realmark has celebrated 30 years in real estate in Western Australia through the original founders of John and Anita Percudani, the ethos of working for clients and helping them achieve their life aspirations still remains true today through commercial, residential and strata property management.
